I love poppies, and every year I try to grow some in my garden. Apparently, they are “so easy to grow”—but maybe it’s just me—I always seem to have some issues. Only one or two ever end up flowering.
This year, though, I tried a new trick. Apparently, these flowers do not like to be disturbed and prefer a“weed-free”ground. I’ve tried all that in the past, but this time I simply put fresh compost on top of the soil (after clearing out as much as I could). I then watered the ground first, because the seeds for these flowers are teeny tiny, and if you water them after planting, they might just scatter where you don’t want them to be.
It’s worked! I have lots of seedlings growing—I’m not even going to try and thin them out. I’ll just let them take care of it themselves.
After all my careful planting, I came across some poppies growing on the pavement just near my home! It seems they’re pretty sturdy and can thrive in tricky places on their own, yet when it comes to us planting them, we have to be so particular! Weird, huh?
This photo popped up from my memories—it was from a summer break I had with some friends. It was a beautiful day.
