The Family Man (Season 3)

 

It took quite some time for Season 3 to drop. I enjoyed it, and although it doesn’t have quite the same fast-paced storyline as the first two seasons, I still think it’s worth checking out. It brings in topics I hadn’t really thought about before, so it’s surprisingly thought-provoking. There will be a Season 4, and I hope we don’t have to wait too long. :)

If you enjoyed the first two seasons, then definitely give this one a watch.

P.S. I didn't like that they changed the opening credits. It was better before! Also I really like the character of 'JK' played by Sharib Hashmi. Everyone needs a JK as a friend!

Miss Scarlet (Season 5)

Another delightful season of this wonderful series. You know how people say, “Make James Bond a woman,” or “Sherlock should be a woman”? Well… here is proof that you don’t need to rewrite other people’s work to fit a narrative—you can create original series and characters instead. Miss Scarlet is such a lovely show. It’s fun, and the characters are all so beautifully written. This is what original writing is all about! I can’t wait to watch the next season. I think the writers are now having a lot of fun with these characters, and it shows.


I highly recommend this show if you enjoy fun murder mysteries (without the gory bits) and period costume dramas and original writing.

Synopsis: DI Thomas Lynley and DS Barbara Havers form an unlikely police detective duo. Their contrasting backgrounds create tension, but they unite to solve crimes, navigating class and gender issues.


Review: I never watched the original series (since this is a remake) and decided to check it out. It’s at best okay, but otherwise I don’t really see the point of it. The cast has absolutely no chemistry, and there’s supposedly some tension between DI Lynley and his boss, but we never find out why. Everyone just seems to hate one another, and they simply… exist. The mysteries aren’t mind-blowing, the scenery is fine, but overall I’m not sure what the show is trying to achieve. I watched it because of someone else, but I didn’t find it engaging, and the stories felt standard and bland. Honestly, I don’t think it would be a crime if this was cancelled.

Mystery Road: Origin (season 2)

 

Synopsis: The story takes place six months after Season 1, in Loch Iris — a small timber town haunted by the ghosts of the past.


Review: I loved Season 1, but Season 2 is depressing and painfully slow. It just doesn’t have the same spark or originality as the first season. The plot drags on and on, and by the end, I just wanted the show to be over — I didn’t care about the storyline at all. It felt contrived, everyone in the series looked depressed and Jay Swan was acting like a rogue agent, imprisoning and roughing up people just because they “looked suspicious.” If you enjoyed Season 1, I’d recommend skipping this one — it’s really a waste of time.

Shadow Lines (2019 - )

Synopsis: In 1950s Helsinki, a secret intelligence team defends Finland's independence as global powers and their agencies converge on the neutral country amid the Cold War.


Review:A random but excellent find about a secret service working to protect the interests and safety of Finland during the Cold War. It is really enjoyable with a little mystery in the middle. This was my first Finnish production, and I really enjoyed it. It has a little bit of 'The Americans' vibe about it, but it was obviously shot on a smaller budget, so don't expect a like-for-like type of show. If you enjoy spy shows with a touch of Cold War, then you will love it. Check it out.

Uri and Anna, Holocaust survivors, start a new life in Israel, concealing their traumatic past. After 25 years, Mossad compels Uri to infiltrate a Nazi group in Germany to locate the escaped war criminal Mengele.

Review: One word: Brilliant. This is such a thought-provoking, seriously well-done show with a compelling mystery. I really recommend it. It’s a fictional series, but it was inspired by real events, so it has a bit of drama, a bit of history, and a touch of reality. I highly recommend it. I really hope it gets renewed for Season 2.

I’m so impressed with Oliver Masucci — he learnt Hebrew for his role! I’m sure it wasn’t easy!

Synopsis: When Eliza Scarlet's father dies, he leaves her penniless, but she resolves to continue his detective agency. To operate in a male-dominated world, though, she needs a partner - step forward a detective known as the Duke.


Review: Some of my friends had recommended it a long time ago, and I am so glad I finally checked it out. It’s such an original story, and also very feel-good and comforting. I highly recommend it: if you enjoy shows like Sherlock, Dr Blake's Mysteries, Vienna Blood, Signora Volpe and others in the same vein, you’ll love this. It really is a heart-warming and sweet show.


P.S. I really love the character of 'Moses' played by Ansu Kabia.

Freedom at Midnight (2024 - )

Is the electrifying story of India's struggle for independence. Based on the bestselling book of the same name, it recounts the partition of India and Pakistan, and the religious and socio-political dynamics of the era.


Review: I watched 'Rocket Boys' by SonyLiv and went on their website to see what else they had done and when I saw this series (based on the excellent book of the same name. That book was also the source material for 'Gandhi' starring Ben Kingsley ) I had to get a subscription. It is beautifully shot, extremely well acted and cast and it is thought provoking and also very tough to watch at times as it shows the communal riots and what happens when politicians use the masses for violence to get what they want. I highly recommend it if you like history, movies based on historical facts and period dramas.


I just read that there will be a second series out soon. I cannot recommend this enough.

LAPD Detective Renee Ballard oversees a new cold case division in the department.


At first, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this because I was still upset over the cancellation of Bosch: Legacy, but I was letting my hurt feelings get in the way. I absolutely loved this series and the characters—it was so nice to see some of the usual faces from the Bosch Universe! Loved seeing Bosh, Edgar, Mo and Chandler! Who needs Marvel Universe when you have this?!


What I love about the characters and stories created by Michael Connelly is that they feel authentic and have many layers. The stories and mysteries seem real, with no preaching—just straight-up storytelling.


I truly hope they bring Bosch back again and that we see more crossover between the various characters. It would be a crime not to! I highly recommend this series; it’s quality writing and well worth your time. A must-watch.

Bosch: Legacy (The Final Season)

One of the best detective series, in my opinion, and this last season did not disappoint. It was a fantastic show, just like the series of books it’s based on, and I have no idea why Amazon would cancel it! They have a new series called Ballard, from the Bosch universe, coming up, but I don’t understand why they couldn’t have created that and kept this series as well. It’s a bonkers decision, but I suppose when you want to produce cheap, mass-produced rubbish, you’re not really interested in investing in quality! I hope Amazon regret their decision and bring this back — or perhaps Netflix might be interested? They already have the excellent Lincoln Lawyer, so why not bring Bosch to the network too?

Honestly, the stupid decisions to cancel good series really irritate me. There aren’t many quality shows around.

Sugar (2024 - )

Private detective John Sugar investigates the disappearance of Olivia, the beloved granddaughter of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he unearths Siegel family secrets, old and new.

This is a beautifully shot and original take on the detective drama, with a twist I didn't see coming! It also feels like a love letter to LA; it will make you want to go there. I absolutely loved it and I'm glad it's being renewed for a second season. Highly recommend! Sugar is soooo stylish!
